Our History

Our History 1991 - 2003
Jan 28, 1991   One of our biweekly demonstrations against the Gulf War was shown on NBC Today show. Winter and Spring '92  Campaign to Cut Military Spending
Referenda were voted in twelve towns (Acton, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Wayland, Westford and Weston) calling for our Congressional representatives to enact 50% reductions for military spending.
1994 and 95  Showed the NBC Dateline show "Deadly Fire" in four homes and the Earth Day celebration in Concord, at two classes at the Univ of MA / Lowell and in Lincoln to educate about the devastation caused by depleted uranium weapons.
May 1996  With Citizens Research and Environmental Watch (CREW) won Concord Town Meeting support  for Article 41 to support waste removal oversight at Starmet. April 27, 1997   Two hundred people attended a forum "Radioactive Weapons and Waste in Concord: The Toxic Shots Heard Round the World", organized by CREW and Grassroots Concord with six panelists from different parts of the US. Organized demonstrations against bombing Iraq in February 1998 and December 1998; and against bombing in Kosovo and continuing in Iraq in April of 1999.
Jan 15, 2001   Organized demonstration and press conference to ban depleted uranium weapons which received broad regional and European media coverage including Associated Press, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Lowell Sun, "Peacework", French TV news (TFI) and an Italian news magazine, (Panorama). Feb 20, 2001  Presented Congressman Meehan with petitions to Ban Depleted Uranium weapons signed by 596 local citizens. June 2001  With Citizens Research and Environmental Watch, won 'Superfund' status for the clean-up of toxic waste at the Starmet Corp site in Concord.
Post 9/11   Held meeting on 9/20/01 to consider non-violent ways of responding, and large forums on 10/29/02 "Justice not Vengeance" with speakers from MADRE; and 2/24/01 "Will the USA Patriot Act Jeopardize your Civil Liberties?" Building a Movement   In 2002-03 hundreds of us vigiled and demonstrated against a preemptive war in Iraq. We held signs and banners on Route 2, Rt 9 and Rt 128. We worked with CPPAX organizing a bus to NYC for the global demonstration on Feb 15. We supported Military Families Speak Out at Sen Kerry's Office; and joined Lowell groups to urge Congressman Meehan to "Stop Waffling!"
Nuclear Non-proliferation Witness   May Day, 2005, Vigiled and demonstrated against nuclear non-proliferation at the United Nations, followed by a march to Central Park where....
